Cycling
If you are a newbie to cycling, there are many things you'll need to know before you get started:
Finding your wheels - If your cycling is as rusty as that old bike you've had tucked away in the garage for years, start looking for a new bike at a specialist bike store RATHER than a department store. Women should consider female specific models, but opt for what feels comfortable and appeals to your liking & personality. Consider a women's specific bike seat such as Terry for the perfect saddle.
The right fit - If you are a recreational rider or avid cyclist, it is important to get your bike set up properly. Identify your cycling goals then go to a bike store to get properly fitted. This can reduce injury and improve your technique as you continue to ride and get strong.
The Gear:
The first accessory you will need is a helmet. Look for a well ventilated, easily adjustable helmet. Specialized & Bell/Giro are good brands to keep an eye out for. Most bike stores will help fit the helmet for you when you purchase from them. The helmet is very important - do not go cheap or skip this important aspect of your gear.

Cycling Shorts
The two purposes of cycling shorts aree to provide padding and to prevent chafing. If you wear underwear underneath, you are simply adding a layer of fabric that can rub and chafe. GO COMMANDO if at all possible. It really is important to own a decent pair of bike shorts. Always look for a good padding and seamless leg.
